Christmas tree worm with copepods

We're very excited to be contributing to the "Protect Our Coral Sea" campaign. Working with the Australian Marine Conservation Society and underwater filmmaking legend Valerie Taylor, we filmed and edited a campaign video to encourage the general public to get informed and to tell the pollies—environment minister Tony Burke, in particular—that the Coral Sea should be protected...

We're drying out the gear after an excellent weekend at a Stage A Freediver course with Bjorn Nielsen of Apnea Australia, who teaches up and down the QLD coast. Our goal was to have more time to shoot images while on a single breath...

filming in the Mary River (link)

I had an excellent day on the Mary River last week. The job was to gather some underwater footage of the critically endangered Mary River Cod (Maccullochella mariensis) and other critters and habitat. The footage is for an upcoming film produced and directed by Luke Barrowcliffe of Goorie Vision...

Video: Underwater cleanup in the Noosa River

Sunday, 9 October 2011 11:26:12 AM Australia/Brisbane

Underwater clean up of the Noosa River (link)

Last weekend I joined the good people from the Sunshine Coast Diving Club (SCDC), as well as volunteers and staff from the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA), to help out with an underwater clean up of the Noosa Woods area of the Noosa River. Being a popular spot with fishermen and a high use area for Biosphere and other community events, combined with floodwater from early in the year, we expected to find plenty of rubbish. But, we were pleasantly surprised...

Video: Diving the ex-HMAS Brisbane on Queensland's Sunshine Coast

Tuesday, 27 September 2011 11:27:20 AM Australia/Brisbane

Diving the HMAS Brisbane (link)

My local waters have finally warmed to what I consider reasonable for diving: the magic 20C's! While I prefer the temperature bouncing around the high end of the 20C-scale, I can do 20C—albeit with layers of neoprene... and girlish squeals on entry. Yes, I am soft. What lured me into the water this week was the steady stream of great conditions here on the Sunny Coast: flat seas, no swell, and decent vis. I joined Sunreef Dive Centre for a double dive on the ex-HMAS Brisbane, a scuttled Australian Navy Adams-class destroyer which has fast become the focus of the local dive industry...

monitoring water quality

The rainwater that falls on my neighbourhood drains into, and is filtered through, a beautiful melaleuca swamp filled with paperbarks, reeds and sedges. From there, the water flows into an intermittent stromwater creek, then out to Lake Doonella, down the Noosa River, and out to the ocean. I monitor the water at the creek, which is less than 100 metres from our house...

The Ribbon Reefs are a string of ten large reefs that together form the outer edge of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. One feature of the Ribbons is that they serve to shelter the inner reef from big storm damage...

The Cod Hole is one of the signature dives on the far northern section of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Our recent expedition to the region (June 2011) was only a few months after Cyclone Yasi, and I'd heard some worrying reports of coral damage. I was anxious to see it for myself, and to spend some quality time with the biggest friendly fish I have ever had the pleasure of diving with. Plus, this dive site was always on my list to provide some nice footage for our upcoming "Diving Queensland" DVD...

dwarf minke whales video (link)

It's a rare and wonderful privilege to be in the water with whales. Eye to eye, mammal to mammal. The connection is undeniable and unforgettable. There aren't many places in the world that you can get this close to these majestic giants. Predictable, reliable, and legal in-water encounters are almost non-existent. The minkes of the Great Barrier Reef are an exception, and we're still buzzing from our recent minke adventure. So how to get good underater photos and videos? Here are our tips to help make your shooting easier and more successful...

Short film "Galapagos Islands: Evolution to Extinction"

Wednesday, 30 March 2011 7:50:20 AM Australia/Brisbane

Galapagos Islands conservation video (link)

I've made a short film that summarises some of the major environmental and ecological threats to the Galapagos Islands: overfishing, shark-finning, introduced species (animals & pathogens), the steady influx of people, and a legal system that has been ineffective in countering these issues. The video includes my interviews with local experts from WildAid, Conservation International, and Sea Shepherd. Filmed entirely on location during our dive expedition to the islands in 2010.....
